Fleeing for his life to escape a hit-and-run driver, DI Jason Shepard wakes up in hospital with electrical burns and no memory of who he is or how he got there. This is the basis for the new ITV1 thriller Fallen.
Things get more confusing for Jason when he sees a woman and small boy at the end of the bed who insist they are his estranged wife Louise (Kerrie Taylor) and eight-year old son. But to him they are complete strangers.
"He has to find out what his name is, what his life was, and why these people were chasing him," says Jonathon Cake, who plays the undercover police detective.
"This Jeep had chased him down a steep motorway embankment where he was hit by another car, but he cannot remember a single thing - including his job and his marriage. His mission is to find out the truth about who he was before his past catches up with him."
in the two parter, which also stars former Bad Girl Simone Lahbib as tough cop DCI Gunning, there are a fair amount of car chases and guns. Jonathon, 35, felt comfortable with neither. "I felt slightly ridiculous, running around with a gun like a little boy", he says.
"It's the same with cars. I really can't understand the whole macho thing. I don't have one, and even want one. The only time I drive is when I'm abroad and I hire a car."
As for his own memory, the former Milk Tray man admits that there are times when he has lapses. "There was this postcard from someone who obviously felt she knew me well," he recalls. "She suggested we met up with some other friends at a house warming party. Problem was I couldn't think who any of them were. I am hopeless when it comes to remembering peoples names and faces."
One name he will never forget is that of his partner. So who is she? "I'm not saying!" he says with a smile.
