Monarch of the Glen
Monarch of the Glen began in 1999. It is shown in 20 countries around the globe and is also broadcast on BBC Prime, which is widely available throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa on cable and satellite. It is extremely popular worldwide, but especially so in Australia, where it has been one of the highest rating shows on ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). In the USA it is broadcast on BBC America, where Season 3 started in August 2002, and whole days have been devoted to Monarch of the Glen marathons. Filming ran from April to October. One episode may take 15 days to shoot, and a series of 10 episodes takes about 6 to 8 months to complete. Monarch is not actually based on any books - the screenplays are all original. However, it is inspired by the Highland novels of Compton MacKenzie, especially the one called, appropriately enough, Monarch of the Glen. MacKenzie (1883-1972) is perhaps remembered most fondly for his gentle comedies of Scottish life like Whisky Galore. However, he also wrote many other novels and plays, including a ten volume autobiography called My Life and Times.
